There are 8,482 ATMs in the state, of which 7,584 had already been recalibrated. Officials said that the remaining 898 ATMs are going to be recalibrated this week. The situation has improved drastically since the Reserve Bank of In dia (RBI) gave directions to banks to focus on recalibration of ATMs. The scene outside ATMs also seemed to be much better this week compared to the past few weeks.
"A few small banks in rural areas could not perform recalibration yet as it involves local expenditure, which maintenance vendors were not prepared to take up," V Tyagarajan, the state level bankers committee ( SLBC) chairman explained on Monday.
Bankers say that most ATMs are only dispensing 2,000 notes. "People are withdrawing only 500 and 100 notes from banks. So several of our ATMs are left with 2,000 notes only. We are hoping that RBI will send more 500 notes in the next remittance," a bank manager added.
